Here's a number worth sitting with: the average water damage claim in the US runs somewhere north of $11,000, according to insurance industry data tracked by the Insurance Information Institute. Compare that to the cost of an annual inspection — usually a couple hundred dollars. So why do so many homeowners skip it?
Because plumbing is invisible by design, and invisible things don't get budgeted for. Nobody schedules a check-up for a pipe they can't see behind drywall. That's exactly the mindset architects and contractors are trying to break.
Where the Real Decisions Get Made
Most people assume plumbing problems start with bad pipes. They usually start with bad layout decisions made months before anyone cuts a pipe.
Take manifold plumbing systems — sometimes called home-run plumbing. Instead of pipes branching off each other in a chain (so one leak means shutting off water to five fixtures), each fixture gets its own dedicated line running back to a central manifold. Retrofit Is Harder Than New Build, But Not Impossible

New construction gets the easy version of this story — plan it right from the start, and you're set. Retrofitting an older home is messier. You're working around finished walls, existing layouts, and pipe materials that might be forty years past their intended lifespan (looking at you, galvanized steel).
Still, a phased approach works. Start with the shutoff valve — if it's the only one in the house and it's rusted shut, replace it first. Then move to appliance connections, since braided stainless steel supply lines cost almost nothing and fail far less often than the rubber ones builders used through the '90s. Next, install leak sensors under sinks and behind the washing machine; they're inexpensive and take twenty minutes to set up. The whole-home monitoring system is the last step, once the cheaper fixes are already in place.
What This Actually Means for Homeowners

When's the last time someone actually looked at your water heater? Not because it burst. Just to check. Ask around. You'll get the same blank stare every time.
That's the gap. Not bad pipes or missing tech. Nobody looks until something's already wrong.
Fixing it doesn't take much. Go find your main shutoff valve right now. Can you reach it in ten seconds if a pipe bursts at 2 a.m.? Many people can't, and they only find out when they're standing in an inch of water.
Put a $20 sensor under the water heater. Check the rubber supply lines behind the washing machine, since those split without warning. Twenty minutes, total. Nobody brags about a leak sensor at dinner. But it works.
